Germany currently does not have nationwide licensing for many beauty services. Hair and cosmetic tattoo, however, are regulated in the country.
When setting up a business, you will need to comply with any local laws relating to business registration.
There may also be local regulations regarding health and safety when operating your business.
Below are the requirements for licensing hair, cosmetic tattoo and other beauty services.
Beauty Services in Germany
Facials, microdermabrasion are microneedling beauty services regulated in Germany. These are considered esthetics procedures that require vocational training from a recognised institution for 2-3 years. You will need to pass the examination after training to get a certificate, which is your ticket to legally practice.
Other beauty services that don’t require certifications for training are:
- Nail Technology / Nail Services
- Face and Body Waxing
- Manicure and Pedicure
- Lash and Brow Tinting & Lash Perming
Hair Services in Germany
For hairdressers, they need formal apprenticeship that lasts for 3 years, combining theoretical and practical training from a recognised school. You will then need to pass the state examination after the apprenticeship where you can obtain the journeyman’s certificate.

- Hair Cutting
- Hair Coloring
- Hair Extensions
- Hair Treatments
Cosmetic Tattoo Services in Germany
Cosmetic tattoo artists must go through a hygiene training program by a recognised institution. You will then be given a certificate upon training completion, which you need to work legally. Although it’s not legally mandated, you are expected to train cosmetic tattooing skills at a recognised school by health inspectors and clients.

- Permanent Makeup (Nano Brows, Ombre Brows, Lip Blush / Tattoo, Eyeliner)
- Microblading
