Austria Hair & Beauty Regulations

If you want to work as an employee, in a salon, for example, you don’t need to be licensed. It entirely depends on the salon if they want to employ you with your qualifications.

However, you need a trade license to work independently, such as owning a salon and renting chair. To get the license, you must get a recognised apprenticeship training program and/or enrol in a recognised course.

There may also be local regulations regarding health and safety when operating your business.

Below are the requirements for becoming a licensed hair, beauty or cosmetic tattoo professional.

For beauty professionals, you need esthetics or cosmetology vocational training, which is then followed by a final exam or apprenticeship. Completion for the training allows you to get a certificate of competence, which is a requirement for the trade license.

Beauty services are:

  • Face and Body Waxing
  • Manicure and Pedicure
  • Facials (including Skin Needling & Microdermabrasion)
  • Lash and Brow Tinting & Lash Perming

For hair services, you need 3 years of on-the-job training and vocational school and then pass the final examination. Application for a trade license then follows, so you can work independently.

Hair services include:

  • Hair Styling
  • Hair Cutting
  • Hair Coloring
  • Hair Extensions
  • Hair Treatments

Cosmetic Tattoo Services in Austria

Cosmetic tattoo artists should also complete a certified training program, hold a hygiene certificate and register as a restricted beauty trade.

Cosmetic tattoo services include:

  • Permanent Makeup (Nano Brows, Ombre Brows, Lip Blush / Tattoo, Eyeliner)
  • Microblading
As these services involve penetrating the skin, there may also be local regulations pertaining to health and safety (for example, sterilization and disposal of needles) and the premises you operate from.
